Data Ownership

Data ownership is the assignment of accountability for the quality, accuracy, security, and appropriate use of specific data assets to a named individual or role within an organisation. A data owner is responsible for defining access policies, ensuring data quality standards are met, approving changes to data definitions, and being the point of escalation when data issues arise. Data ownership is a governance mechanism — without it, data quality is everyone's concern and no one's responsibility.

Why This Matters

Data ownership is the single most effective governance mechanism for data quality. When no one owns a data set, no one is accountable for its accuracy — and the finance team becomes the de facto cleaner of everyone else’s mess. For mid-market companies building towards reliable reporting and AI readiness, assigning data ownership is the first step. It does not require new technology. It requires a decision about who is responsible for what, and the organisational authority to enforce it.
